Packing of elastic rings with friction

چکیده

We study the deformations of elastic filaments confined within slowly-shrinking circular boundaries, under contact forces with friction. perform computations a spring-lattice model that deforms like thin inextensible filament uniform bending stiffness. Early in deformation, two lobes make contact. If friction coefficient is small enough, one lobe slides inside other; otherwise, move together or bifurcates other. There follows sequence mixture spiraling and bifurcations, primarily former latter large With zero friction, simple predicts maximum curvature total energy scale as wall radius to -3/2 -2 powers respectively. nonzero similar scaling but prefactor up 8 times larger, due delayering range curvatures. For coefficients 1, are qualitatively without at outer wall. Above case becomes dominated by buckling near

Packing of elastic wires in spherical cavities.

We investigate the morphologies and maximum packing density of thin wires packed into spherical cavities. Using simulations and experiments, we find that ordered as well as disordered structures emerge, depending on the amount of internal torsion. We find that the highest packing densities are achieved in low torsion packings for large systems, but in high torsion packings for small systems. An...

Packing of elastic wires in flexible shells

The packing problem of long thin filaments that are injected into confined spaces is of fundamental interest for physicists and biologists alike. How linear threads pack and coil is well known only for the ideal case of rigid containers, though. Here, we force long elastic rods into flexible spatial confinement borne by an elastic shell to examine under which conditions recently acquired knowle...

Inextensible elastic rods with torsional friction based on Lagrange multipliers

Elastic rods are thin flexible objects typically undergoing large non-linear deformations that cannot be modeled with linear methods. They are used in a number of research fields, e. g., to represent hair or ropes in animations, or catheters or needles in medical simulations. In this paper, we propose a deformation model for inextensible elastic rods. The method of Lagrange multipliers is emplo...

Shakedown in elastic contact problems with Coulomb friction

Elastic systems with frictional interfaces subjected to periodic loading are sometimes predicted to ‘shake down’ in the sense that frictional slip ceases after the first few loading cycles. The similarities in behaviour between such systems and monolithic bodies with elastic–plastic constitutive behaviour have prompted various authors to speculate that Melan’s theorem might apply to them – i.e....

Friction Laws for Elastic Nano-Scale Contacts

– The effect of surface curvature on the law relating frictional forces F with normal load L is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations as a function of surface symmetry, adhesion, and contamination. Curved, non-adhering, dry, commensurate surfaces show a linear dependency, F ∝ L, similar to dry flat commensurate or amorphous surfaces and macroscopic surfaces. In contrast, curved, non-ad...
